It has been said that we encounter others, or cross paths with others for a reason. Often times we find an immediately bond with specific people, having a sense that we have know these individuals our entire life. Yet based on the presence of certain individuals, we sometimes feel as thought we may have known that person from some other time or space. Still, there are other times individuals simply enter your space causing the tiny hairs on the back of your neck to stand up and take notice, yet we aren’t really sure just why.
Conversely, there is a belief that we are on a destined path, perhaps a path of discovery, a path guided by instinct, the key components of which are to trust what lies within; trust our inner voices/ and trust where those instinct and inner voices will lead us. When we learn to listen to those instincts, combine them with what we feel in our hearts, often times we can end up on some of the most spectacular journeys one could ever imagine. The trip Agnes and I recently ventured on to Florence, Italy is one such journey.
Looking back from my perspective now, the odds of Agnes and I ever meeting, let alone hooking up to travel thousands of miles across the globe, could be compared to the odds of winning the jackpot on the lottery.
One day, a mutual friend had suggested I see Agnes. As many of you know, Agnes is well known Intuitive Therapist with various abilities such as Clairvoyance and vast training in Clinical and Holistic modalities. However, back when it came to strangers, including Agnes, I was not a completely trusting soul, and almost positive I was on guard during our entire first session. Don’t get me wrong, my gut instinct was telling me there was something about Agnes that caught my attention, something calming, yet quite mystical that really intrigued me, only I couldn’t put my finger on it.
Agnes and I began corresponding, but soon after our initial meeting my life began to change drastically. An opportunity presented itself, my gut began pushing me to go and without hesitation, I left Ontario, travelling 3,000 miles to Alberta. Coincidence…I don’t believe so, as I’ve never believed in coincidence.
Returning to Ontario, Canada in the fall of 2009 to collect some of my things, I made a point of dropping in on Agnes. During our visit things took on a rather mystical turn. At some point during our conversation I noticed Agnes becoming distracted as she began focusing her attention toward the corner of her office. I knew she could 'see' things but never really thought I'd have an opportunity to experience it. Suddenly I thought, "I wonder what she is seeing?" A short time later she said, "Wait, something is coming through…I feel a presence." Wow great, I remember thinking jokingly…I brought some friends in spirit with me. There was a moment of anticipation as Agnes went on to share " I see a man…he is dressed as a priest, St…St. something,” she said, hesitating momentarily before continuing. “St. Philip is his name… he lived in the 1500's, I sense Italy." I sat watching, dumbfounded as Agnes continued, almost as if reading a script. Although still not quite sure what was taking place I thought it very cool nonetheless. She continued, " He says we had a past life together.” (Well what do you know ) Prior to our visit Agnes did not know Saint Philip and I’m not so sure she had ever heard of him, but after conducting some research she learned that he was Saint Philip Neri, born in Florence in 1545, ordained in 1551 and quite well known in that time. Saint Philip had an unusual sense of humor, was full of character, and well known for his teaching techniques and motivation in others, which I must say, seemed to me somewhat unorthodox. (Hmm…how interesting. This guy’s sense of humor and the fashion in which he taught reminded me a lot of my experience teaching in China) In awe, yet not exactly clear about what had just transpired or why, Agnes and I returned to our casual conversation once again and this incidence was put on the back burner…at least for the time being !
We continued corresponding and oddly enough began to form a friendship; a bond I now believe to be unbreakable. This past winter, I remember an e-mail Agnes sent implying that she had always wanted to go to Italy – more so lately, and for some reason she had a very strong desire to go there… oh boy, now I understood that concept all too well.
Although it had been about 30 some years since I had travelled through Europe backpacking, I did remember Italy having a very strong impact on my life. It had an incredible allure/pull on me, not to mention intermittent episodes of déjà vu which I encountered during my time in Florence and to this day, I have never forgotten.
When Agnes mentioned that someday she wanted to go, I jumped on it, “Let’s do it!” I wrote.
I could only imagine the look that must have crossed her face as she read my response, and more to my surprise was her response, “Ok.”
Oh my…this was different, as very few people would ever consider such an endeavor, let alone the spontaneity of such a venture with someone they really knew nothing about then follow through and just ‘Do it’. Yet, on some lever, the conceptual continuity of such a plan could only be summed up as the work of universal brilliance at its finest.
Since Agnes felt such a strong pull to Italy, and I already had one there, we decided we would make this a journey of discovery, perhaps a journey of self discovery; a journey into exploration into past déjà vu’s and possibly uncover that which one would not normally look for on such an expedition.
Over and over, I pondered the thought of what would happen if we didn’t get along once we arrived in Florence, and what we would do in the event things didn’t work out. Yet, as we began putting the trip together our instincts were telling us that it was right and for whatever reasoning, the journey was meant to take place.
During my search for flights, a seat sale suddenly surfaced with KLM. However, it was such a great sale one couldn’t possibly give a second thought. I ran my findings past Agnes and without hesitation, she replied, ‘Let’s do it!’
The day I wrote to confirm our flight was now official, I remember she was like a little girl who had just graduated from kindergarten to grade one, something you could never put a price tag on; priceless in fact.
And so our journey had begun.
Our next challenge was to not only find, but to secure our accommodations. While surfing the net, I discovered that Europe seemed big on apartment rentals, as opposed to hotel accommodations. Although quite a new experience for me, we explored many possibilities before choosing just the right one. In fact, we had decided on one, the perfect apartment, only when it was no longer available when I tried to book it, which meant had to go with our second choice. The reason our first choice fell through wouldn’t become apparent until we were in Italy.
Everything in place, both Agnes and I began to see flashes of information that seemed to relate to Italy, either during a dream state, or through visions, yet we would have to wait and see if any of it was relevant !
The day finally arrives…
